Are you ready to be a part of a design race pursuing novel state of the art software defined radio technology? We are looking for an energetic, highly skilled engineer to share in the shaping of our next generation products.
Our goal is to create technologies that allow Rockwell Collins to differentiate our products from the competitors’ and create new market opportunities through innovation. We’re presently creating state-of-the-art electronics, including: phased array SATCOM terminals that provide global internet connectivity, multifunction reconfigurable RF front-ends, and modular UAV radios for communication, radar, and electronic warfare.
The advanced radio technology department is responsible for tasks related to the research and development of advanced radio technologies for both commercial and military markets.
This exciting principal level position requires a background in FPGA design, including experience with verification. Successful applicants will collaborate in the development of new chip designs — carrying ideas from concept and planning through design, test, and release. Additionally, this position involves collaboration with program management, our talented multidisciplinary team, and internal/external customers.
Design cutting edge software defined radio for FPGAs and ASICs for our commercial and military customers (includes updates and clean sheet designs)
Define requirements for new designs and develop requirements specification
Perform architectural design-including block diagram, trade off studies and design reviews
Perform detailed design-including implementation in VHDL, design analysis, and design reviews
Push the boundaries by introducing machine learning into FPGA processors
Support board level FPGA design & integration, including directing or performing PCB layout
Perform FPGA design verification tasks
Participate in project retrospectives and assist in continuous process and workflow improvements
Participate in collaborative efforts to creatively solve problems in innovative ways
Create presentations explaining the approach and relevance to the design
Present technology concepts to customers/subcontractors in support of funding pursuits
Support external funding pursuits through proposal writing and/or customer meetings
Assists in the strategic technical planning including development of technology roadmaps and project concepts in alignment with business unit goals
Lead project teams (8-10 individuals)
Oversee efforts of and train less experienced designers
Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline. Advanced degree is desired, but not required.
Applicants must have or be able to obtain a United States Department of Defense clearance.
Demonstrated ability to design, layout, and analyze using Digital FPGA tools such as Vivado, Embedded Development Suite, or others
Ability to use timing diagrams for design and verification
Ability to create and use synchronous and asynchronous state machines
Familiarity with Xilinx and Intel Altera architectures/components
Must be able to complete meaningful work in the absence of complete specifications and help create digital architectures for RF system requirements as a work in progress
Experience with test plans
Demonstrates technical knowledge/expertise in multiple technologies
Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot problems while integrating components or subassemblies
Demonstrated problem-solving skills, and data-driven decision-making
Excellent verbal/written communication and teamwork skills
Experience in identifying, communicating, and mitigating risks
Knowledgeable of industry trends within his/her domain
Demonstrated ability to work in a creative, as well as practical problem solving environment
DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED
Strong interest in machine learning
Experience in Tensor Flow, Python
Experience with embedded microcontroller and/or microprocessors
Process Control – Requirements capture
Demonstrated ability to do own PCB layout using CR-5000 or other drafting tool
Experience in integrating digital components with RF components/assemblies including filters, low-noise amplifiers, mixers, power amplifiers, power regulators/converters, switches, frequency synthesizers
Demonstrated ability to apply digital modulation, coding, and error correction
Bid & proposal resulting in successful capture of funding
Experience with environmental effects testing
Working Conditions: This position requires domestic travel up to 5% of the time. Work hours are typically Monday-Friday with very occasional weekends required. Work can take place in an office environment and microelectronics laboratory.
Supervision: The Principal Electrical Engineer does not have direct reports, but will direct work activities for supporting technicians, drafting, and project support staff. They will work collaboratively with component designers and other multi-disciplinary engineers. The Principal Electrical Engineer is led by the Engineering Manager for RF Systems who is led by the Director for Advanced Radio Systems.
Physical Demands: This position does not require physically strenuous activities such as lifting, carrying pushing, or pulling.
Relation to Other Jobs: The Principal Electrical Engineer will work with a team of other engineers and technicians. They also must collaborate with internal and external customers, peer engineers, finance, and leadership.
