Job Summary

Our team is looking for an engineer to work on a wide variety of Research and Development projects in the fields of Autonomy, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), UAS Services and Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality (AR/VR/MR). This systems position involves both development of software modules and their integration within larger existing and new prototypes. Some embedded programming involving drones and VR/AR/MR devices will be required.

Job Responsibilities

The candidates will have an opportunity to build prototypes of hybrid control systems for drones and test them in the real world. Our group is developing non-traditional flight control methods that use machine learning. It is be expected that the candidates will have the ability to apply their machine learning skills in the context of unmanned aircraft flight. The job also requires development of the innovative methods of interaction with drones through the use of AR/VR/MR. The group operates a small fleet of fixed wing and rotorcraft drones for research purposes. Candidates with Part 107 license and experience operating unmanned systems are encouraged to apply.

As an engineer on the Advanced Technology Center’s Immersive and Autonomous Systems (IAS) team, you will be a member of an experienced, dynamic design group employing best practice design methodologies supporting our next generation of research. As part of our team, you’ll have the opportunity to significantly contribute to the research we’re doing in these and other areas.

This position is for an experienced and motivated Software, Computer Science or Computer Engineering candidate to be involved in the design, implementation, and integration of a wide variety of solutions from low Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) to medium TRL.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) discipline.

  • Experience with Python and C++ Able to develop with Web services (Node.js, database modeling, Python, JS, RESTful API)

  • Embedded software development experience

  • Experience with Geo-spatial data manipulation/programming

  • Able to write software with Machine Learning (MDPs, Neural Nets)

  • Familiar with Simulation protocols (DIS/HLA)

  • Experience with Graphics Programming (OpenGL, CUDA, OpenCL)

  • Familiar with Software development environments (Docker, Visual Studio)

  • Radio frequencies knowledge (propagation, features, limitations) preferred

  • Pilot license preferred

  • Done License, operational drone experience preferred
