As a leader in the aerospace industry, we are growing rapidly and have a number of exciting positions available right now, including a Staff Engineer-Plastics in our Interior Systems segment located in Winston-Salem, NC.
This highly motivated and innovative individual will be responsible for leading and/or participating in the design and development activities from concept all the way through commercial launch of commercial aircraft cabin interior products. Activities will focus on identifying, articulating, and quantifying customer needs and requirements; translating these requirements to product requirements and specifications; assessing the suitability of current designs and technologies to meet these requirements using advanced computer aided design tools; and, where necessary, developing and implementing innovative design solutions to address needs or gaps. More specifically responsibilities will be to: Collaborate closely with our Business Units Engineering teams to refine products and processes, and help bring new R&D concepts to life!
As staff specialist, the Staff Engineer - Plastics
will be responsible for applying knowledge of product design, assembly, tooling, and materials. This position will be recognized as a technical expert within division of the company and responsible for interpreting theories and concepts of plastic manufacturing and apply sound/robust material/process principles for material selection based on component and process requirements based on strength, reliability and manufacturability.
Analyze and review plastic designs for all Rockwell Collins Interior Systems branches to ensure compliance to all applicable regulatory and performance requirements .
Support the design of plastic parts for aircraft interior components with emphasis on weight, cost, aesthetics, manufacturability, reliability and maintainability.
Master the applicable flammability requirements (FAR 25.83(a), FAR 25.853(d), ABD0031 and D6-51377).
Fully understand amorphous and semi-crystalline resin systems, with and without short fiber, long fiber or glass bead reinforcements. (parts, materials, and manufacturing processes).
Research Identify new technology, fabrication and assembly processes for plastic parts and transition those technologies form concept into production.
Create open, view and manipulate basic 3Dmodels/layouts using CAD software (Unigraphics) verifying fit, form and function.
Analyze parts commercial mold flow software and generate detailed reports.
Interface with the strategic purchasing department and with suppliers regarding material selection part and tool design.
Work with Strategic purchasing on technology sourcing strategies (make, buy, ally)
Develop project workflows, detailed schedule, budgets and capacity plans
Minimum Requirements Include:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering from four-year College or university and eight-plus years related experience and/or training; or Master's degree in Engineering and three-plus years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience with the following manufacturing processes: injection molding, blow molding, in-mold decoration
Preferred Requirements Include:
Bachelor's degree in Materials and Process, Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering with 10 years of professional experience with plastics or Master's degree in Materials and Process, Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering with 5 years of professional experience with plastics.
Design experience of parts and tools.
Experience working in Unigraphics NX7.5
Familiarity with FAA requirements.
Experience working with CAD software such as Unigraphics, Solidworks, Pro-E, and/or Catia or willingness to learn 3D modeling
Experience performing FEA analysis of composite structures or willingness to learn FEA.
Expert level Mold Flow certification
The key responsibilities in this position rely on expert knowledge of tooling and processing (injection, vacuum, and extrusion). Additionally, problem solving and decision making are required to give proper advice to the design engineer, supply chain or supplier based on structure, weight, aesthetics, cost, manufacturability, reliability, maintainability, etc...
Secondary responsibilities include establishing new corporate plastics processes that could cover areas such as new material introduction strategies, new material testing strategies, plastic product design strategies, best practices, and training.
